Devil’s Kitchen (Guna Caves)

Devil’s Kitchen (Guna Caves) is one of Kodaikanal’s most mysterious and adventurous attractions.Historically known as the Devil’s Kitchen, is a deeply fascinating and mysterious rock formation located in Kodaikanal. Situated between three massive, vertically standing boulder structures known as Pillar Rocks, these deep chambers and ravines were first documented by British surveyor B.S. Ward in 1821. The site gained widespread fame and its current moniker after the 1991 Tamil movie Gunaa was shot here, and it has more recently captured public attention through the 2024 survival-drama film Manjummel Boys, which depicts a true rescue story from its depths.

Reviewers and visitors emphasize several notable elements of the site:

  • Restricted Access: Because of the extreme danger posed by the deep, slippery chasms and hidden drop-offs, the actual deep cave chambers are permanently cordoned off with steel mesh fences for visitor safety.
  • The Mesh Walkway: Visitors can walk along a safely grilled watch-path surrounded by imposing shola trees and the massive exposed roots of ancient trees, creating an eerie, atmospheric environment.
  • Misty Landscapes: The area is frequently enveloped in thick, sudden mountain fog, making it highly prized by photography enthusiasts for its dramatic, moody scenery.
