• The Navapashanam / Dasabashanam Idol: According to spiritual tradition, the primary idol was created over 3,000 years ago by Siddhar Bogar, the legendary ancient sage and alchemist. Bogar famously crafted the idol of the Palani Murugan temple out of Navapashanam—a highly complex chemical amalgam of nine distinct herbal and mineral poisons. After completing the Palani statue, he crafted this secondary deity out of a similar mystical composition (often locally referred to as Dasabashanam, utilizing ten potent elements).
• The Alchemical Perfection: When milk, panchamirtham, or water is poured over this specific idol during rituals (Abhishekam), it absorbs the subtle properties of these alchemical materials, transforming the offerings into a powerful, therapeutic medicinal prasadam.

Historical Origins

The temple’s history is tied closely to two major figures in Tamil spiritual lore:

• The Child Savior: Legend has it that the wandering saint-poet Arunagirinathar was traveling through these perilous mountain forests when he was threatened by a wild demon. Lord Murugan manifested as a small child to protect him. In profound gratitude, Arunagirinathar sang verses praising the child deity, coining the name Kuzhandhai Velappar.
• The Chera King’s Dream: After centuries of worship, the shrine fell into neglect and was swallowed by the dense jungle. Between the 2nd and 5th centuries CE, a Chera King named Perumal became separated from his hunting party and slept near the spot. Murugan appeared in his dream, instructing him to excavate the hidden idol. The king cleared the forest and constructed the early foundations of the temple structure seen today.
