Thalaiyar Falls

Thalaiyar Falls (Rat Tail Falls) is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in South India. Located in the Palani Hills near Kodaikanal, it is famous for its long, narrow stream that resembles a rat’s tail when viewed from a distance.

Highlights

  • Height: Approximately 297 metres (975 feet).
  • Claim to fame: The highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu and among the tallest single-drop waterfalls in India.
  • River: Formed by the Manjalar River, a tributary of the Vaigai River.

Best Viewpoint

The easiest and safest place to admire the falls is from Dum Dum Rock Viewpoint on the Kodaikanal Ghat Road. On a clear day, the waterfall appears as a thin white ribbon cascading down a dark cliff.

Trekking

  • Trekking to the base or top of the falls is challenging and should only be attempted with experienced local guides.
  • The trail involves steep climbs, boulders, and stream crossings.
  • There have been fatal accidents in the past, so extreme caution is essential.

Best Time to Visit

  • July to December (after the monsoon) offers the best water flow and scenic beauty.
  • Early morning provides the clearest views before mist develops.

Distance from Kodaikanal

  • Approximately 35–40 km by road to the viewpoint, depending on your starting point in Kodaikanal.
